Welcome to Je m’appelle Tiny! I’m a former French teacher turned stay-at-home mom living in Brooklyn with my husband “RR” and our baby boy “Pookie.” I moved to New York from New Orleans 14 years ago and have always wanted to move back home. Yes, that’s right – fourteen years later, and New York has not become home. My heart has and will always be in that crazy town. RR moved from Germany to New York 12 years ago and never wants to leave.
Now that we have a toddler, it is time for us to move out of our 1.5 bedroom apartment, but the question remains, where to?? I vote for, yep you guessed it, New Orleans. That’s not to say I don’t have my reservations. They say that once you’ve lived in New York for 5 years, you will have trouble living anywhere else. If we move to NOLA, I’m hoping we don’t miss all of the conveniences too much. For example, it could be frustrating to have to drive everywhere, to not be able to walk to the grocery store to grab that one ingredient we forgot, to not be able to walk just about anywhere we want to go for that matter, and to have an enormous choice of restaurants, shops, tiny urban parks and events for kids right outside of our high-rise apartment building lobby. More about the pros and cons of New York vs. New Orleans living elsewhere. Basically, it’s a difficult decision that we’re struggling to make.
It’s so difficult that I recently sought the help of astrologist, Paula Shaw. While she helped me tremendously in many other respects, her advice to “just go for it” has not convinced me or my husband that this is the right thing for our family. Could it be that my husband and I just have to make this decision for ourselves, despite the difficulty? I guess so.
This brings me to why I’ve started this blog and what it’s all about. I believe that we are at this standstill for many reasons, some of which stem from deep-seated issues that I need to address. Those issues I will address in the Letters to my dad posts of Je m’appelle Tiny. Additionally, the Brooklyn and New Orleans pages will help to serve as the pros and cons list I’ve been meaning to create for months now. Basically, I’m hoping that through this process, I can get my family to the next chapter in this Choose-Your-Own-Adventure novel and feel confident that the protagonists will live happily ever after.
Also, my family loves to eat (Pookie is absolutely no exception!), and we really enjoy checking out new restaurants and coffee shops. Now that we have a baby though, it’s not quite as easy as it used to be. In my Reviews section, I offer my take on eateries and cafés, focusing not only on the food, ambiance, etc, but also on the kid friendliness of the joints.
Eventually, I will also eventually fill my Travel section with posts detailing the many tantalizing vacations we have taken and will take because …

And finally, as a new parent, I know how much I appreciate good old Google for occasionally (read: all the time!) providing me with advice as to “WHAT IN THE HELL AM I DOING?!,” so I thought I would return the favor and help other desperate parents as much as I can by sharing what I have learned as a novice parent.
